SANTORUM WINS STRAW POLLFormer U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum hasn’t won the Republican presidential nomination or the election yet, but on Saturday night, he did win the largest straw poll in Ohio.With 1,068 people casting secret ballots in Akron, Santorum claimed an impressive 74 percent of the vote. The next closest was Mitt Romney, with 15 percent, followed by Newt Gingrich with 6 percent and Ron Paul with 5 percent.“Ohio is Rick Santorum country,” declared Bryan Williams, who announced the results of the straw poll after Santorum spoke at the Summit County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner in Akron.Williams, a Santorum delegate and former director of the Summit County Board of Elections, oversaw the counting of the straw poll, along with Kim Arnold, assistant to the deputy director of the elections board.County GOP Chairman Alex Arshinkoff said many people don’t take a ballot because they don’t want to cast a vote.— Stephanie Warsmith
